5/24/2023 0 Comments Uzumaki manga bookAnd if teens enjoyed The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, they may also enjoy Uzumaki. Uzumaki (3-in-1 Deluxe Edition) by Junji Ito - A masterpiece of horror manga, now available in a deluxe hardcover editionKurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town. Tomie is also good though is slightly more sexual and bloody in nature. For any teen looking for horror in formats other than movies, I would highly recommend anything by Ito. Each chapter draws the reader into the madness that the main characters and eventually the whole town experiences. There aren’t any sexual instances but a woman is drawn naked in one of the chapters. There are no real language issues, but the illustrations and content are extremely graphic, especially for black and white illustrations. This manga is very dark and most definitely for older teens and adults. The curse caused by the spirals changes humans into slugs, causes pregnant women to murder and eat others, and hurricanes to target individuals. Kirie and Shuichi start to notice a strange pattern, spirals, cropping up everywhere and causing individuals and even natural weather events to act strangely. The whole tome is broken into chapters that follow Kirie Goshima, her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, and at times her family, as their small town in Japan slowly “spirals” out of control. Ito’s Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is a classic horror manga for older teens and adults. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Angelfall book reviewThe story-line was vivid and always left me with that desperate feeling of having to know what was going to happen next! The characters were full of life, even the secondary ones, and I became deeply immersed in what happened to them. I was addicted to Angelfall by the first page. Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco, where Penryn will risk everything to rescue her sister and Raffe will put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again. Anything, including making a deal with Raffe, an injured enemy angel. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Jo piazza we are not like themI moved to New York City in 2002 convinced I would be the next Carrie Bradshaw. That gave me some comfort, just as her struggles on the original SATC always helped striving 30-somethings feel less alone.īut it also reminded me of how much harder the hustle is these days. (She's upstaged by her hilarious co-host played by Sara Ramirez, arguably the best part of the reboot.) After a multi-decade career in media, Carrie Bradshaw is floundering just like the rest of us. Podcasting doesn't come naturally for her, and she struggles to be as witty and carefree on air as she was in print. With "And Just Like That.," Carrie now co-hosts a podcast about sex and gender roles. and Canadian workers feeling stress on a daily basis, up by eight percentage points from last year, according to Gallup's recent State of the Global Workplace report. workers are also some of the most stressed in the world, with 57% of U.S. With so much rapidly changing – whether it's technology, the economy or the pandemic – we've all had to adjust our expectations of what work, career and success look like, and what it takes to get there. Just ask the millions of people who are part of the Great Resignation. And her struggle is real: The cool, creative dream job has shifted since SATC fist aired, and so has the grind. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Network effect by martha wellsTODAY! □ has an AMA over on /54IjSoHNA2- Tordotcom Publishing May 6, 2020 With its freedom it mostly watches TV (and busts open a corporate extraterrestrial artifact conspiracy). Like its novella predecessors- All Systems Red, Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol and Exit Strategy - Network Effect is narrated by a part-human, part-AI security "SecUnit," who succesfully hacked the governor module meant to keep it subservient to corporate directives. Network Effect, the first full-length novel in The Murderbot Diaries, came out Tuesday from Tor. Like them, Murderbot save lives and stomps enemies, but like us, Murderbot watches (and rewatches) hundreds of hours of streaming media and frets over every social encounter. Introduced in the 2016 novella All Systems Red, author Martha Wells' bestselling The Murderbot Diaries have won the highest accolades in science fiction, in part by bridging that empathic gap between us and those fictional warriors. Action heroes don't spend much time sitting around on the couch, watching hours of TV, usually because they're too busy killing people. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Fangs sarahFilled with Sarah Andersen’s beautiful gothic illustrations and relatable relationship humor, Fangs has all the makings of a cult classic. But as with all rules, there are times when individuals have found a way around this particular edict. That’s because the city has declared itself to be a “vampire-free zone”. Gangs, drugs and corruption run rampant in the capital, but what you won’t have to worry about are vampires. That the book takes place in Mexico City was a compelling factor too. I’m not someone who’s ever needed much motivation to pick up a vampire story after all, and after learning that one of the main characters is a descendant of Aztec blood drinkers, I was even more intrigued. Back then it still didn’t have a title, but the mere description of it clinched it for me. I’ve been champing at the bit to read Certain Dark things ever since I first heard about the book. Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books (October 25, 2016) This does not affect the contents of my review and all opinions are my own.Ĭertain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia I received a review copy from the publisher. Book Review: Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia 5/24/2023 0 Comments Tenth of december book reviewIts format reminded me of Lincoln in the Bardo, with a fractured and jerking narrative. The third story I’ll carry with me after closing the book is The Semplica Girl Diaries. Frustrating as it is for the story to be short, this is the mark of an excellent one. Why and how did this become normal? Or was it instead some rogue experimentation? I wanted character development and back story. While it’s truly cringe-worthy, I also want to know more about this world. It was inventive world building, in which people are test subjects for drugs that deliver effects unlike our current pharmaceuticals. Saunders’ story Escape From Spiderhead was on the list, and is in this collection. While I was reading these, I saw a list of “creepy Halloween stories” or something similar. For example, in the titular story a chance encounter of a boy and a man leads to some unexpectedly chilling events. Primarily written from a male perspective, most of the characters are pretty mixed up. And that’s just what I look for in a collection. These stories are wry, insightful, and some are slightly disturbing. I think it helped me to have a sense for the way Saunders uses language and cadence in his writing. Nevertheless, I’m glad to have read them in this order. I’m late to the George Saunders party, having read the short stories in Tenth of December some months after his recent novel Lincoln in the Bardo. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Funny you should ask book reviewHe is an alcoholic, and everyone doubts his acting ability though expected, it’s nice to still read about his own struggles. She’s constantly getting asked if she or did not sleep with Gabe Parker and constantly reminded of that night.Ĭhani isn’t the only one who has fears of her own Gabe has his own issues. It’s discouraging to see friends having grand accomplishments that they rightfully deserve but also wonder why you do not have the same opportunities as them. Chani’s perspective on life is something that I can relate to, but as a person who is also a writer, I understand her fear of not being successful in a different writing style. This isn’t the most incredible romance book ever, but it’s relatable due to the character development. With that aside, I was really drawn into the story of Chani and Gabe, two awkward people who click instantly well. I finished this book in 24 hours, and I have to state that because most of the time, I barely stay up late anymore unless I’m scrolling mindlessly on TikTok. This book, to me, was Hallmark meets realistic romance. I enjoyed some ups and downs of this book that I think other people will agree on. The thought of a hot celebrity heartthrob being into a “normal” person is always mind-boggling but never farfetched until it happens to you. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Over a Hot Stove by Flo WadlowI'm here to tell you, she must have had more than one failure that wasn't just cake! (I did wonder, if she had made the cake once and realised she put too much baking powder in the first time, why on earth did she do the same thing again?) Compared to the envious moaning about "Us" and "Them" in Below Stairs: The Classic Kitchen Maid's Memoir That Inspired "Upstairs, Downstairs" and "Downton Abbey", it's a much more pleasant read, and not just because Wadlow worked for a better class of employer she did her best at each job, not trying to get by with the minimum and taking each difficulty as a challenge to her ingenuity. I started cooking family meals myself at about age 11, and have been doing it ever since. I wished there might have been a bit more depth-not dishing dirt, but a few more tales of her misadventures as a beginning kitchenmaid cook. She also moved around too much, spending little more than a year in most posts until she got married-and in those days married women weren't expected to remain in service unless their husband was the butler or something.Ī light, fast read. No dissing on the great and the good to be found here-Wadlow is the essence of the "family retainers" of 19th and early 20th century fiction, though down in the kitchen she was too far from the action to live vicariously through her employers. |
